Introduction

We were the Student Conference of Space Art (S.C.S.A.) gathered by
Professor Takuro Osaka in 2002, and were thinking about cultural
utilization of outer space together with the Japan Aerospace Exploration
Agency (JAXA). We sometimes interviewed with astronauts to think how arts
in space exist. * Please see column.

During the long-term space missions, mechanical noise is severe and
astronauts tend to expect psychological support by Space Art in
close-quartered environment can cause excessive stress. Also, astronauts
said about the beauty of the Earth and greatness of gravity.
We consider the role of Space Art as the way of communication, and the
thinking of new culture through the view point from outer space.

Space Art Projects

"Sound Wave Sculpture" is partof a series of experiments that
involve making art out of music and small particle-like materials.

" Sound Wave Sculpture 3"

In the third experiment, the length and
shape ofthe pipe containing the materials
were also varied and then observed for
potential artistic expressions.

" Sound Wave Sculpture 2" - The Material Experiment

The purpose of this material experiment is
to change the contents within the cylinder
and investigate the difference in the
dynamics seen.

Star of Sonance -- The Universe to Feel Fingertips and Sounds 指先と音で感じる宇宙 --

Location: Observatory History Museum, National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ)

Listening to the universe by groping
participants' ways in the dark.
Starting from the Earth and traveling to the far beyond the universe.
This was a collaboration with younger mambers of NAOJ named as Tenpla.

Detailes

Works by Professor Takuro Osaka and members of S.C.S.A.(the predecessor of C.S.A.)

" Sound Wave Sculpture"

This is an experimental work as a
sculpture that is formed by music
composed with sinusoidal sound
waves which create the movement of
particles in a cylindrical container.
This idea was developped by S.C.S.A
in 2002, and realized by the supports
by Professor Osaka.

Detailes

"Spiral Top"

This was designed to produce light arts
using a spinning top that has arms
illuminating with LED point light sources.
In microgravity, the center of gravity of
the spiral spinning top continuously
moves while it is spinning.

"The Great Flier"

Wings, a propera, a balloon, and so on.
Reconstruction of flying objects invented
from dreams to fly in the past.
かつて空飛ぶ夢から発明された飛翔体たちを再構築。
Testing their flying performance in microgravity.
Each title: Ikaros, Da Vinci, Wright Brothers,
Goddard, and Tsuorukofusuki.
